For this reason, while a ship is lying in the roads, an obligatory pilot will generally remain on board. As a rule the pilot remains on board: a) tankers carrying oil, gas or chemicals b) ships over 180 m in length The following types of vessel may be exempted from enlisting a pilot: a) ships up to 180 m in length b) empty oil, gas and chemical tankers with a length of up to 150 m. Exemptions will be granted by the pilots subject to favourable weather and traffic conditions, taking into ac- count factors such as anchor position, ship size, draught etc. Exemptions may only be granted at wind forces of up to 7 bft. Schillig Roadsteads North/South flood tide currents are strong, setting southeastwards; ebb tide currents are strong setting towards the north; tidal currents up to 3.5 knots; wave heights up to 4 m; shore affords no shelter in storm conditions with northerly winds. An Underkeel Clearance (UKC) regulation of at least 1 m must be observed at all roadsteads.
